What to do in Riga in autumn: eight ideas for daylight and for dark

Daylight in September and October is shorter than in summer, so outdoor plans belong to the first half of the day. Four things worth doing while the sun is up.

• Vērmanes dārzs and Bastejkalns. Two parks in the centre, at their best in the short window when the leaves have fallen but have not yet been trampled. Free, and a fifteen-minute walk apart.
• Mežaparks. Bigger, quieter and built for a long walk. This one can take half a day on its own.
• Old Riga on a weekday morning. Fewer tourists than in summer, and photos without strangers in the frame.
• The Central Market. Autumn is mushrooms, apples and pumpkins, and the market looks different in this season than in any other.

Darkness arrives earlier than anyone would like, and that is when most plans fall apart. Four ideas that do not depend on the weather.

Why autumn is the best season to play

In summer it feels wrong to go indoors when it is light until ten. In autumn the opposite is true, and there is a practical side to it: a weekday room before 18:00 costs 60 €, and those are the least contested slots of the week.

• Monday to Thursday after 18:00, and Friday: 80 €.

Which rooms suit autumn

Autumn works well with rooms that have a heavy atmosphere. You do not need horror; a good story is enough.

• Journey to Soviet Riga — 14+, hard. A Soviet-era atmosphere that lands differently in Riga than any invented scenario would.
• The Bunker — 7+. A Cold War underground shelter, heavy air and history at every step.

A rainy autumn day, hour by hour

A simple plan that survives both rain and early darkness.

• 11:00 — a walk in a park or the market, while it is light.
• 13:00 — lunch somewhere warm.
• 15:00 — an escape room. The cheapest slot on a weekday, the most popular one at the weekend.
• 16:30 — coffee nearby and an argument about what went wrong in the room.
