On a first date the problem is not the venue but the silences, and not knowing how long to stay. Here are seven ideas with prices and timings, sorted by how much conversation each one demands of you.
First date ideas: seven options
A first date wants a shared activity and a clean way to leave after an hour. The list below is sorted by how much conversation each option demands of you.
- An escape room. 60 minutes of talking about the task rather than about yourselves. Afterwards you have a subject for dinner, and you have already seen how the other person behaves when something does not work.
- A walk through Old Riga or Bastejkalns. Free, and it commits you to nothing. The drawback: in autumn and winter it is a short option.
- Coffee rather than dinner. A classic precisely because leaving is easy. Dinner on a first date is two hours at one table, which is a lot.
- A museum or an exhibition. Good if you both actually want it. If not, it is a walk with a ticket.
- Bowling or pool. Movement and a score, but the conversation arrives one shot at a time.
- Cinema. Two hours where you cannot talk. That is a second date, not a first.
- A cooking class. A long format with a group, which can be too much the first time.
The first option is ours, for a specific reason. The hard part of a first date is not finding a venue but sitting through the pauses. A shared task fills them by itself, and an hour later you can talk without falling back on questions about work and flats.
If the pauses worry you
An hour where the talking happens by itself
- A room for two: 60 € on a weekday before 18:00, 80 € in the evening
- 60 minutes with a shared task instead of questions about work
- You leave with a ready subject for dinner
What it costs for two
The price is per room rather than per person, so two players pay more per head than a group. Honestly: five people pay 12 € each, two pay 30 €.
- Monday to Thursday before 18:00: 60 € per room, so 30 € each.
- Monday to Thursday after 18:00, and Friday: 80 €.
- Weekends and public holidays: 100 €.
If budget matters, take a weekday afternoon: it is both the cheapest and the quietest. For a first date it is also easier, because leaving afterwards spoils nobody's evening.
Which room to choose
A first date needs neither horror nor the hardest difficulty. You want a room two people can get through most of, and one nobody has to be brave in.
- Captain's Cabin — 6+, medium. A sea story about a lost captain, bright and friendly.
- James Bond — 10+, medium. A fast pace if you are both the energetic sort.
- Harry Potter — 7+. Good if the other person has read the books, which is already a conversation.
House of Mysteries and The Experiment are 16+ and much heavier. Save those for a third date, once you know they enjoy that. How frightening they actually are is covered separately.
How long a first date should be
An hour and a half to two hours is the length where nobody stays out of politeness. A practical schedule looks like this:
- 18:50 — meet at the door. Not at a restaurant: at a table the first five minutes are the hardest.
- 19:00–20:00 — the game. That hour is the date in itself.
- 20:15 — coffee or dinner nearby. If it is going well the evening continues; if not, you have spent an hour rather than three.
This order also settles the second awkward question: who pays. When the room is booked in advance, it simply never comes up.
Three first-date mistakes
They are about the format rather than the place, which is exactly why they repeat.
- Too long a format. Three hours at one table is a lot even when everything is going well.
- A place with nothing to do. If conversation is the only activity, every pause becomes noticeable.
- A surprise with no warning. Say at least that comfortable shoes are needed and that it starts on the dot.
If it is not a first date and you want something less obvious, the ideas are in this piece. If neither of you has played before, there are seven tips.
What an hour tells you about a person
This is the side effect nobody plans for, and the reason the format works.
- How they behave when the plan fails: regroup, or stop.
- Whether they listen to what you say or carry on with their own idea.
- How they react when you are the one who got it wrong. This is the most useful of the three.
- Whether they talk about it afterwards with interest or treat it as an obligation.
- And the last one: whether you both found the same moment funny. That cannot be faked.
Where to go after the game
Pick the second half of the date in advance rather than on the pavement afterwards. All three addresses are central, and each has its own natural continuation.
- Meierovica bulvāris 14. Five minutes from Old Riga: the widest choice of places where two people can get a table without booking.
- Jeruzalemes iela 2/4. Next to the Central Market, quieter in the evening, a few minutes from the edge of Old Riga.
- Miera iela 61. Cafés right there. Good if you would rather avoid crowds and tourists.
One practical note: choose somewhere you can just have coffee. If the date is not working, leaving after half an hour is far easier than leaving a booked table with a menu on it.
If the date is in the afternoon
For a first meeting a daytime date often works better than an evening one. The reasons are practical.
- Less weight. An evening date reads as an occasion; an afternoon one reads as a walk together.
- Lower price. A room on a weekday before 18:00 costs 60 € against 80 € in the evening.
- More free slots. Daytime is picked less often, so booking a few days ahead is enough.
- A clear ending. It is still light afterwards, which gives you a reason to continue with a walk rather than dinner.
Questions people ask
Can two people finish a room?
Yes, the rooms are built for teams from two up. A pair usually gets through exactly as much as stays interesting in an hour.
What does a date for two cost?
60 € per room on a weekday before 18:00, 80 € in the evening and on Friday, 100 € at the weekend. The price is per room, not per person.
How long does it take?
The game is 60 minutes, or about an hour and a half with the briefing and photos.
Which room works if they dislike the dark?
Time Machine, Captain's Cabin and Harry Potter are bright rooms with no sudden noises.
What if neither of us has ever played?
There is a briefing first, and the game master follows the whole hour and gives hints when you are stuck.
Take a medium room on a weekday evening, mention the comfortable shoes, and have a coffee place picked for afterwards. An hour with a shared task tells you more about someone than two hours of questions across a table.
