Christmas gift ideas that are not things: 7 options

Christmas gift ideas that are not things: 7 options

Every December brings the same question: what do you give someone who has everything. Here are seven presents that are not objects, with prices and an honest note on who each one suits.

Seven Christmas gift ideas that are not objects

A present with no wrapping solves two problems at once: no guessing sizes, and no risk that they already own one. Seven options, sorted by how easy they are to arrange.

  • An escape room. An hour for a group of 2 to 7. Works for a couple, a family or a group of friends, and the date is theirs to choose.
  • A spa or sauna visit. The quieter option for people who reach December tired rather than hungry for adventure.
  • A workshop. Pottery, cooking, photography. This one also leaves something physical behind, made by them.
  • Concert or theatre tickets. Requires guessing both taste and date, so save it for someone you know well.
  • Dinner at a restaurant. Simple and safe, and also the most common present on this list.
  • A course or a membership. Gym, language class, swimming pool. The risk here is real: the gift turns into an obligation if they had not planned it themselves.
  • A photo session. Good for families, less often for couples, and almost never for people who dislike being photographed.

The first option is ours, and one thing sets it apart from the rest. An escape room is a present the recipient uses together with someone: giving a game means giving an evening with other people, not an hour alone.

When time has run out

A gift card for an experience instead of an object

  • Works for any room; the date is chosen by the person who receives it
  • A room costs 60 € to 100 € and includes five players
  • The card can be arranged the same day you think of it

Choosing by the person rather than by the price

An experience gift has one rule: it has to match how that person rests, not what you would enjoy.

  • For someone who has everything. An escape room or a workshop. You cannot buy them an object, because they will have bought it themselves.
  • For a couple. A game for two and dinner afterwards. There are ideas for the whole evening in this piece.
  • For a family with children. A room from age 6, where the child plays alongside the parents. The list is here.
  • For colleagues. A gift card is safer than a fixed date, because they pick the time themselves.
  • For a teenager. A room with their friends rather than with their parents. At that age this is the whole point.

What an experience gift costs

An escape room is priced per room, not per person, so the present works even when you do not know how many people will go.

  • Weekdays before 18:00: 60 € per room.
  • Weekdays after 18:00 and on Friday: 80 €.
  • Weekends and public holidays: 100 €.
  • Five players are included; each extra adult is 10 €, a child under 14 is 5 €.

Sixty euros buys a full hour for five people, which is 12 € each. The same amount spent on an object usually buys one thing for one person.

When to buy so it does not go the usual way

A gift card can be arranged on any day, including 24 December. The problem is usually elsewhere: evening and weekend slots in December and early January fill faster than the rest of the year, because everyone else is looking for the same hours.

So the rule is simple. Buy the card whenever you think of it, but tell the recipient to book a time right after the holidays rather than in March. If the card is meant for a specific evening, take the slot before you hand over the present.

What to actually hand over

The one drawback of an experience gift is that there is nothing to put under the tree. Two minutes of work fixes that: the printed card in an envelope, a short note saying why you chose that particular room, or a small object tied to the scenario. A magnifying glass for the detective room, an old compass for The Bunker.

There is a separate piece on why experiences outlast objects.

What does not work as a present

Experience gifts have their own failure modes, and they repeat every year.

  • A present that needs time they do not have. A course with two classes a week sounds good in December and becomes an obligation in January.
  • A fixed date nobody agreed on. Tickets for a specific evening are a present only if you know that evening is free.
  • An activity you would enjoy. The classic mistake: giving what you would want to receive.
  • An oversized group present. When ten people chip in for one gift, choosing it becomes a ten-person conversation, and in December that never finishes on time.

A simple test before buying: would they have chosen this themselves if you had handed them the money instead? If not, the present is about you rather than about them.

Presents for colleagues, and the budget

Offices usually agree on a figure: ten, twenty or thirty euros a head. An escape room fits inside that frame when it is a present for a team rather than for one person.

  • A room for five on a weekday before 18:00 costs 60 €, which is 12 € each.
  • Eight people need two rooms: 120 € on a weekday, or 160 € on a Friday evening.
  • For a team over ten, booking three rooms or more at once can get you an individual offer.

For one colleague on their own, a card beats a fixed time: they choose who to bring. There is a separate piece on the company evening itself, with prices and a schedule.

Which room to choose as a present

If you want to give a specific room rather than a card, the choice follows what the person watches and reads.

  • For a detective fan: Sherlock Holmes, 7+ and up to 7 players.
  • For someone who likes history: The Bunker or Journey to Soviet Riga.
  • For a group that wants a challenge: House of Mysteries, the hardest room, 16+.
  • For a family: Time Machine or Captain's Cabin, both from age 6.

If you are not sure, fall back to the card. The full list of rooms with age limits and descriptions is on the rooms page, and it takes five minutes to read.

Questions people ask

How much is a gift card?

You choose the card on the gift card page. As a guide: a game costs from 60 € on a weekday to 100 € at the weekend, and the price includes five players.

Can the recipient choose the room?

Yes. The card works for any room, and they pick the date and time themselves on the booking page.

How many people can play on one card?

The price covers a room with five players. Each extra adult is 10 €, and a child under 14 is 5 €.

Does it work as a present for a child?

From age 6: Time Machine and Captain's Cabin. From 7: Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter as well.

How long should the evening be?

The game is 60 minutes, or about an hour and a half with the briefing and photos.

If the choice is still unclear, start with the question of who they would play with. The answer usually settles both the room and whether you need a card or a fixed date.
