December is close and there is still no plan for twenty colleagues and one evening. Below are six options, the price of each room and the arithmetic of what it costs per person.
Christmas party ideas that work for a whole team
A good company evening usually has two halves. Something that makes people talk to each other, and only then the table. Start with the table and the conversation stays between whoever happened to sit next to whom, and an hour later half the room is looking at a phone.
Six options, sorted by how many people they actually connect.
- An escape room. Teams of 2 to 7 get locked in for an hour and the only way out is together. Everyone talks, including the people who never speak up at the office.
- A cooking class. Two to three hours, and dinner happens along the way. Works up to about 15 people, after that there is not enough counter to stand at.
- Bowling. Easy to organise, but the group splits across lanes and after half an hour each lane lives its own life.
- Karting. The results table gives everyone something to argue about all evening. Same catch as bowling: you drive one at a time.
- A guided walk around Old Riga. Beautiful in December and cold in December, and after forty minutes the back of the group stops hearing the guide.
- Dinner in a private room. The fastest answer when there is almost no time left to arrange anything.
The first option is ours, and it goes first for a reason rather than out of politeness. An hour-long game breaks the company into small teams where everyone has to speak, and afterwards there is something to talk about at dinner: who found the cipher, who spent half an hour pulling the wrong lever.
Worked example
Three rooms on a Thursday evening, 12 people
- 3 rooms at 80 € = 240 € for the whole team
- 20 € per person, the game runs 60 minutes
- Book 3 rooms or more at once and you can get an individual offer
What a Christmas party costs for a team of 12
You pay per room, not per head. A room holds five players, and every player after that is 10 € (5 € for children under 14).
- Monday to Thursday before 18:00: 60 € per room. The last game starts at 17:00.
- Monday to Thursday after 18:00, and all day Friday: 80 € per room.
- Weekends, public holidays and any day after 22:00: 100 € per room.
Twelve people need three rooms. On a Thursday evening that is 240 €, or 20 € per person. The same team on Thursday afternoon before 18:00 pays 180 €, which is 15 € each. For a company of thirty, the gap between a Friday evening and a Thursday afternoon is over a hundred euros.
Book three rooms or more at the same time and you can get an individual offer. The details are on the corporate events page.
How to split a team of 10 to 30
Nine rooms across three addresses, 48 seats in one time slot. The addresses are not equal, and that is what decides how many people can play at once.
- Meierovica bulvāris 14 — four rooms, up to 22 players at the same time. The main address for a large group.
- Jeruzalemes iela 2/4 — three rooms, up to 15 players.
- Miera iela 61 — two rooms, up to 11 players.
For 25 to 30 people there are two ways to do it: two addresses at the same hour, or one address across two back-to-back slots. The second is cheaper, but the first group waits about an hour for the second, so you need somewhere for them to wait.
Four or five people per room is the size that works. A pair simply runs out of time in sixty minutes, while seven in one room means two of them spend the hour standing behind everyone else. Mix the teams up: marketing plus accounting beats department against department.
Five things to settle before you book
These are the questions you will be asked on the phone, and they are easier to answer before the call than during it.
- Date and time. The price changes at 18:00 and again at 22:00.
- The exact head count. It sets the number of rooms and the surcharge for a sixth and seventh player.
- Age. The Experiment and House of Mysteries are 16+. If colleagues bring their kids, take Sherlock Holmes or the Time Machine instead.
- Whether everyone is a first-timer. If so, stay with the medium rooms rather than House of Mysteries.
- Where you eat afterwards. Book the table for after the game ends, not for the same hour.
If you are not sure which rooms to take, there is a guide to choosing a quest, and for a team that has played before, a list of the hardest rooms.
The evening hour by hour, for a team of 12
A schedule you can copy and send to the group. The times are not invented: they come from how long the game runs and how slowly twenty people move from one place to another.
- 18:40 — everyone meets at the door. The booked time is when the game starts, not when you arrive.
- 18:50 — coats off, phones in lockers, briefing.
- 19:00–20:00 — the game. Three rooms in parallel, four people in each.
- 20:00–20:15 — group photo and comparing results. This is where the real conversation of the evening starts.
- 20:30 — table at the restaurant. Book it for this time, not for 20:00.
For a team of 25 or more, add one line: the first half plays at 19:00, the second at 20:15, and in between the first group needs somewhere to wait. In practice that means booking the table for 21:30 rather than 20:30.
Five mistakes that ruin a company evening
They repeat every December, and all five are avoidable in a single phone call.
- Booking the table for the same hour as the game. The team ends up rushing and nobody gets to talk or eat.
- One room for twenty people. The largest room takes seven. The rest stand in the corridor.
- A 16+ room when children are coming. The Experiment and House of Mysteries drop out immediately in that case.
- Booking in mid-December for late December. Friday and weekend evenings are the most expensive and the most contested slots of the year.
- Teams split by department. People spend the evening talking to the same colleagues as every other day, and the point of the event disappears.
The sixth mistake is rarer and the most expensive: planning the evening without a firm head count. The number of rooms, the price and even the choice of address all depend on it.
What to tell management when they ask about the budget
Numbers work better here than arguments about morale. An evening for twelve costs 240 €, which is 20 € a head, and it includes an hour where the whole team works on one problem. Dinner alone usually costs more per person and comes with no shared task at all.
If the event runs on a weekday before 18:00, the same three rooms cost 180 €, or 15 € each. For a company of thirty, the difference between a Friday evening and a Thursday afternoon is around 240 €, which is enough to add the dinner.
Questions people ask
How many people can play at the same time?
Up to 22 at one address and 48 across all three. A larger company is split into two slots about an hour apart.
How much of the evening should I set aside?
The game itself is 60 minutes. With the briefing and a group photo afterwards, plan for roughly an hour and a half, then book the restaurant.
Is there a discount for a large group?
Book three rooms or more at once and you can get an individual offer. Call +371 22066566 with the date, the time and the head count.
When should I book a December evening?
As soon as you know the date. Friday and weekend evenings go first and cost the most: 100 € per room at the weekend against 60 € on a weekday before 18:00.
What if nobody on the team has played before?
Every team gets a briefing first, and the game master watches the whole hour and gives hints when a team gets stuck. Sherlock Holmes and James Bond are both medium difficulty and suit beginners.
Start with the date: pick the evening, count the people, book the rooms. Fitting a restaurant around the end of a game is easier than the other way round.
