What to do in Riga in the evening: seven ideas with times

A Riga evening splits in two. Until about eight almost everything is still open; after ten the list gets short. These are sorted by how late each one still works.

• A walk through Old Riga. Emptier in the evening than during the day, and in autumn it is dark by six, which makes the same streets look different.
• A sauna. A long evening in one place, if you are not planning to go anywhere afterwards.

If you have company and no plan, start with something that makes you talk and eat afterwards. In the other order the evening tends to end at the table and stay there.

Two evenings you can copy

A couple's evening, starting at 19:00. Game at 19:00, photo around 20:00, table in Old Riga at 20:30. One room is enough: two people get through exactly as much as stays interesting.

A group evening, starting at 22:00. A late game at 100 € per room, then a bar. This is the version for when everyone finishes late and the daytime slots are long gone.

Where to go afterwards, by address

All three addresses are central, but each sits in a different neighbourhood, and that decides where the evening carries on.

• Meierovica bulvāris 14. Five minutes from Old Riga and Bastejkalns. The widest choice for dinner, and nothing to travel to afterwards.
• Jeruzalemes iela 2/4. Next to the Central Market and the southern edge of Old Riga. Quieter in the evening, with the centre a few minutes' walk away.
• Miera iela 61. Miera iela is an evening route in itself, lined with cafés and bars. This is the address for people who would rather skip the Old Town crowd.

One practical note: book the table for 30 minutes after the game ends. The hour finishes exactly on time, but the photo and the coats take another quarter of an hour.

One evening in Riga, if that is all you have

Most guides point visitors with one free evening at Old Riga, and that is only half right. Old Riga at night is beautiful, but it is a backdrop rather than an activity.

An evening that works without planning: a game at 19:00, dinner in Old Riga at 20:30, then a walk along the Daugava or up Miera iela. Three stops, and only the last one depends on the weather.

If the evening starts late, slots from 22:00 run every day, which means it can begin after work or straight off a train.

What an evening costs for two and for a group

The price is per room, so the per-person figure depends on how many of you there are. The same Friday evening, four ways.

• Two players: 80 € per room, which is 40 € each.
• Four players: the same 80 €, so 20 € each.
• Five players: 16 € each. The best value split.
• Seven in Sherlock Holmes: 80 € plus 20 € for the two extra players, about 14 € each.

On a weekday before 18:00 every one of those numbers drops by a quarter, because the room costs 60 €. For an evening that means one thing: a group that can meet earlier saves 20 € and gets a wider choice of free slots.

Three mistakes when planning an evening

They come up often enough to list from memory.

• Arriving exactly at the booked time. The booked time is when the game starts. Come ten minutes early or the hour begins with a rush.
• A table for the same hour. The restaurant will not hold it, and the group ends up standing on the street after the game.
• Too hard a room late at night. After a working day a team thinks slower, and House of Mysteries at midnight is a different task than at Sunday lunchtime.
